Biography
Merve Erez is a composer and sound artist. She is particularly interested in layered, mundane sonic structures and spontaneity. Rather than following a flow, her materials tend to break, shift, and reassemble through interruption and discontinuity. Her compositional process involves working with foley recordings, sampled sources, and modular hardware to create a personal sonic pool. For acoustic works, her compositional approach is closer to musique concrète instrumentale. She completed her bachelor’s degree in composition at İstanbul Bilgi University on a full scholarship, where she studied composition alongside studio recording, surround mixing, and mastering. During this period, she studied with Mike Nielsen, Tolga Tüzün, Tolga Zafer Özdemir, Başak Yavuz, and Selen Gülün. She later continued her studies at MIAM (Center for Advanced Studies in Music), pursuing a master’s degree in composition with Reuben de Lautour, Kamran İnce, and Pieter Snapper. Before graduating, she relocated to Sweden with the support of a full scholarship from the Stena Foundation to pursue her master’s studies in composition at the University of Gothenburg, Academy of Music and Drama, where she studied composition and artistic research with Malin Bång and Ole Lützow-Holm. During and after the pandemic, Erez’s interests shifted toward spatial audio and the creation of alternative, artificial spaces for listening. Between 2024 and 2025, she completed formal training as a full-stack developer, which was a transition in her artistic approach toward working with interactive designs. Her current focus is on creating accessible interactive formats for multichannel and spatial audio, situated between installation practices and virtual sound spaces. While nothing replaces real-life acoustics, she believes that both listeners and composers can gain specific benefits from such environments. Her works have been performed and presented by ensembles, performers, and festivals including Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Musica Vitae String Ensemble, Mixtur Festival, Electric Chamber Orchestra, Barcelona Modern, ÆPEX Contemporary Performance, Ensemble PLUG, Awkas Ensemble, HSM Improvisation Ensemble, Sledge Duo, Mimitabu, Simon Halvarsson, My Hellgren, Jari Juhani Piper, Konstmusicsystrar, Ciclo Bahía [in]sonora: Music, Sesin Yolculuğu, and others.
